Fresh Off The Boat is a brand new Asian-American comedy from ABC based on the memoir of the same name by chef and TV personality Eddie Huang.
It’s the ’90s, and 12-year-old Eddie Huang (Hudson Yang) just moved to suburban Orlando from DC’s Chinatown with his parents. Eddie’s dad, Louis (Randall Park) insists his family move to the Sunshine State. Louis bought a restaurant, and not just any restaurant; he bought Cattleman’s Ranch Steakhouse, and the interior along with the food leaves little to be desired.
I have already previewed the first two episodes and really enjoyed them. I watched with my 7-year old daughter and husband, and they laughed, but I’m sure some of the key messages flew right over my daughters head. My family is already a fan of Jessica (Constance Wu).
I’m married to a man whose parents are immigrants, and I could relate to a lot of what was portrayed in the show. I’ve heard plenty of stories from my husband and still to this day his mom tries to get me to eat everything pickled: picked cucumber, pickled mango, picked eggs. I could go on, but I’ll spare you. The smell of kimchi still turns my stomach.
And one more thing, if you’re a fan of ’90s hip-hop, this show is for you!
Starring Randall Park, Constance Wu, Hudson Yang, Forrest Wheeler, and Ian Chen.
Stay tuned! While in LA next week, I’ll sit down with the show’s Executive Producer Nahnatchka Kahn. Do you have any questions you’d like me to ask her? Comment below with your questions.

This sounds like a really fun show. I like shows that are set in the 80s and 90s that are out now like The Goldberg’s. It brings back memories of my own childhood.
My friend Brooke plays the teacher and she is amazing! Can’t wait to see the pilot!
