The thought of going on a family vacation, even a short weekend getaway with the kids, can be enough to make some parents nervous and anxious before the trip even begins. From deciding where to go to packing the right (or wrong) items, there is a lot to consider when heading out on an adventure. A combination of fun family activities and lasting memories makes these Chickasaw Country weekend getaways with the kids worth it.
Chickasaw National Recreation Area
A Best Attraction finalist in “The Best of Chickasaw Country 2014,” parents and kids will appreciate this fun outdoor adventure area. The recreation area’s pristine waters make for a relaxing setting for parents, while the whole family can enjoy a picnic or games in the scenic park. Combined flora and fauna from eastern deciduous forests and western prairies make for an interesting learning experience for everyone.
Tiger Safari Zoological Park

- Exotic birds
- White tigers
- Fennec foxes
Visitors to the zoo can choose to stay overnight in authentic African huts, a Jungle Safari Tree House or enjoy primitive camping with the kids under the stars.
Bedré Fine Chocolate Factory
It doesn’t take much of a sweet tooth to head over to this fine chocolate establishment, the Best Attraction winner in “The Best of Chickasaw Country 2014.” An expansive 34,000 square feet of facility space allows for a large manufacturing floor and retail shop, not to mention a wealth of confectionery delicacies and gifts to keep the kids happy!
This ancient mountain range spans 35 miles from east to west. Visitors come for the waterfalls, hiking trails and lakes in the area. Popular recreation areas in the mountain range include Turner Falls Park, the Chickasaw National Recreation Area and Lake of the Arbuckles.

The lake’s 160 surface acres means lots of swimming, boating and fishing. The lake’s array of fish includes Channel Catfish, Largemouth Bass and Sunfish.

The train provides passenger rail service between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth, Texas.
