Conservatories have become essential living spaces for a lot of homeowners.
To maintain a conservatory’s appeal during the year, it’s always a good idea to update this very versatile room to match the season’s requirements: light and airy in the summer and warm and cosy during the winter months.
When temperatures drop, you will definitely need to add some indoor warmth into your conservatory so you can still enjoy it with the family.
Luminosity is key
As the days get shorter and shorter, you will need to make the most of the natural light and add a few soft light fixtures to create an ideal atmosphere in the darker hours.
Kick the winter blues out of the house by swapping heavy blinds for lighter options that won’t block the sunlight when you need it most.Venetian blinds are an ideal option too as you can choose how much light gets in depending on the luminosity.
On the walls and everywhere else in the conservatory, light colors and pastel will keep the atmosphere bright and cheerful. A little splash of color here and there will more often than not be enough to brighten up the room.
If you can spend a bit of time on a DIY project this winter, applying one of the oh-ever-so-trendy textured coating on the walls of the conservatory can also add a whole new level of charm and warm personality to the room.
Get cozy
Make the most of your extra time indoors in the winter by changing the furniture set-up and creating cosy and intimate spot where everyone will enjoy gathering or curl up with a good book on a wintry afternoon.
Warm materials such as wood and wool will bring an another extra lovely touch of cosiness. Rustic or modern, choose your accessories to fit the overall theme of your house: cushions aplenty, plaids, throws, extra floor lamps and candles.
Winter garden
Bring more life and cheer into the conservatory with a few easy-to-care-for plants such as peperomia, small pines, chinese evergreen, irises and philodendron.
The choice is there for you to make and you don’t need to have a green thumb to keep them alive and see them through the winter. Just make sure they receive enough light (don’t put them in a dark corner of the room!) and enjoy an ideal room temperature.
They shouldn’t need too much water over the winter, but watering needs tend to vary so be sure to check.
If you are a bit more of a gardening fan, you should of course be able to bring your own garden plants indoors to nurse them throughout winter: just be sure to wash them beforehand to remove any insects that could harm the rest of your green friends.
