An HVAC system could perhaps be considered one of the most important systems within your home. If you have a failing HVAC system, there are several problems that may arise that negate your home sweet home feeling, which is why it’s important to take care of your HVAC system and make it a top priority within your home maintenance plan.

1.  Air Pollution

A fully functioning HVAC system pulls dust, combustible products, moisture, allergens, and volatile organic compounds from the air, and circulates new clean air. If an HVAC system is not functioning properly, all of those toxins are staying in your home and growing in number. Consistently breathing in these pollutants can lead to asthma, allergies, upper respiratory infections, and can potentially damage the kidneys, lungs, or even the heart. It’s not enough to have an HVAC unit with an air filter, but you must also check the air filter and clean it accordingly. A good practice is to clean or replace the filter at least every 90 days.

2.  Smells

If an HVAC system is not working correctly, you may experience strong smells in your home. You may smell something burning or a rubbery smell when the unit is over exhausting itself and the motor is running too much. You may also smell a rotten egg-like smell indicating a gas leak somewhere within the unit, which is indicative of an aging unit, or mildew and mold when the moisture within the HVAC unit is not properly draining. Each of these creates health and safety concerns for you and your household.

3.  Costs

Keeping a proper HVAC maintenance plan puts you in the driver’s seat for your bills. By purchasing a maintenance plan, you can stay ahead of the curve in terms of knowing the status of the unit’s condition; whether it’s in good, fair, or poor condition. Similar to bringing your car for an oil change, having a maintenance plan helps you to identify problems quickly, drastically reducing the likelihood of a full system failure and a big hit to your bank account. At the same time, having an HVAC system that functions properly and efficiently reduces your home’s energy usage, which can also reduce your monthly utility bills.

4.  Peace of Mind

Having a fully functioning HVAC system also provides a sense of comfort as a homeowner. Knowing your family can breathe pure air while enjoying the luxury that comes from a cool room on a hot summer day is worth more than you may imagine. Not to mention, a failing HVAC system can be the lead domino in causing other systems to fail, leaving you with more housework and home projects to complete.

There are so many benefits that come from an HVAC system and even more problems that can be caused when an HVAC system is not maintained properly. HVAC maintenance should absolutely be at the top of your home maintenance plans, as the effects of poor maintenance can trickle down to every aspect and element of your home.
