The New York Historical society is one of America’s most loved museums and libraries and has been in its current location since 1908. The museum features incredible collections such as the moving 9/11 artifact exhibit, transportation and maritime relics, and a flawless sculpture collection featuring over 800 works by the likes of Malvina Hoffman and Jean Antoine Houdon.
The Dimenna Children’s History Museum is just one of the many wings of this spectacular building, so let’s take a look at what to expect if you want to treat the kids to a day out there.
Step back in time at the Children’s History Museum
Interactive exhibitions help children to learn as they play with demonstrations including a ‘cast your vote’ display, teaching youngsters about voting in elections throughout time, and the historical viewfinder, in which they can look at photographs of the past and present from the Bronx River to the St George Ferry and learn about how New York has changed throughout history.
A Birthday to remember
When the big day arrives, you can even book your party at the children’s museum, where kids can take part in arts, crafts and games helping kids to learn about American history in a private area of the museum. Included in the price of the day is a birthday poster for all your guests to sign and goodie bag, all courtesy of the museum!
Macy’s Sunday Story Hour
Learn about the history of New York, at the New York historical society museum library, in particular don’t miss Macy’s Sunday story hour, which takes place between 11.30- 12.30am every Sunday. Children have access to a range of diverse literature, from books about US art and literature to historical books which help them learn about American culture through pictures.
Little New Yorkers
Every Tuesday and Friday at 3:30pm, the children’s museum holds story and craft time, where children are read educational stories and encouraged to take part in related arts and crafts. February is Black History month, so children will be reading related stories to help explore the similarities and differences within different cultures and races. Moms and Dads can take a break for an hour, or enjoy a coffee in the café whilst the class takes place.
The Historical Society also offers a range of curriculum-based school program and teacher resources which ensure that adults and children alike can hone a love and knowledge of all things history.
