Don’t choose tired-and-true prom themes this year. It’s time to pool ideas from your favorite movies, TV shows, and books and create a prom theme around it.

We don’t want to even tell you the theme to our prom, because our age will be all-too-evident. Fine. You’ve forced our hand. It was: “Tonight’s the Night,” from, of course, the Bob Seeger song. In considering this choice, it made us realize that between the Seeger song and the super-catchy Animals’ song, “Go All the Way,” (recently used in the closing credits of the Johnny Depp/Tim Burton movie “Dark Shadows”), these songs are not appropriate messages for the purity prom. Assuming you’re looking for more secular prom themes, there are still plenty to choose from. Prom, it could be argued, is a rite of passage, and so is…well, you get it.

Prom Themes Inspiration – Where Do You Get It

Plenty of proms have been set in motion to song – and plenty of songs have been selected as prom themes.

For example:

  • Before It’s Too Late (GooGoo Dolls)
  • Bubbly (Colbie Caillat)
  • Drive (Incubus)
  • Here’s To the Night (Eve 6)
  • Moments Like These (Kelly Clarkson)
  • Never Let You Go (Third Eye Blind)
  • These are the Moments (Edwin McCain)
  • You’re Beautiful (James Blunt)
  • Wonderful Tonight (Eric Clapton)
  • I’ll Be There For You – “Friends” Theme (Rembrants)
  • Take My Breath Away (Berlin)
  • New Romantics (Taylor Swift)

We’re advocates, however, of the more whimsical:

  • Love Shack (B-52s)
  • Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana)
  • Chasing Cars (Snow Patrol)
  • You Can Dance If You Want To (Men in Hats)
  • Escape – The Pina Colada Song (Rupert Holmes)
  • Happy (Pharrell Williams)
  • Truffle Butter (Nicki Minaj featuring Drake & Lil Wayne)
  • All About that Bass (Meghan Trainor)

We love themes that leave things open to interpretation, with the assistance of a creative prom committee. Fans of franchises can rally behind their favorites. If you think, for example, that pushing a “Twilight” theme will be met with opposition, you could still offer the series a nod with “Monte Carlo,” the prom theme at Forks High School in the first film of the popular series.

“The Lord of the Rings” films – especially in mode of the elves – and HBO’s “Game of Thrones” imbue a fantasy splendor that would make for some unique photographs and creative dresses. There are also ways in which a popular movie or television show can be melded with more common prom themes. For example, the clothing for a “Boardwalk Empire” prom would resemble a Roaring 20s’ fete.  “50 Shades of Grey” might become a color theme, with encouragement for dresses in grey, gunmetal, pewter, titanium and silver and more.

Then again, you may feel the way to show off your elegant prom dresses is to go for fun romantic, certified prom themes which include:

  • Hollywood Glamour
  • Party in Paradise
  • Chances Are
  • Le Moulin Rouge
  • New York, New York
  • Enchanted Island
  • Sea of Love
  • My Heart Will Go On
  • Shanghai Nights
  • Mythology and Moonlight
  • Unmasked
  • An Evening in Egypt
  • International Flair
  • Masquerade
  • Paris
  • Beach Life
  • Stars
  • Tropical
  • Underwater
  • Western
  • Shabby Chic
  • Swing on a Star
  • Undead (Walking Dead? – Although we can’t imagine girls would want to be anything but pretty. We can imagine goth pretty, but zombie pretty??)
  • Boogie Fever (As long it’s not “Boogie Nights!”)
  • Island Getaway
  • Red Carpet Romance
  • Roaring Twenties
  • Mardi Gras
  • Retro Runway
  • A Black Tie Affair
  • Circus Spectacular
  • Casino Nights
  • Viva Las Vegas
  • A Royal Affair
  • Night Cruise
  • Fairyland
  • Crazy Town
  • At the Hop
  • Night on the Nile
  • Moroccan Nights
  • Come Down to Cabo
  • Tinsel Town
  • Our Secret Garden
  • Rhapsody in Blue
  • I Could Have Danced All Night
  • When the Lights Go Down in the City
  • California Dreamin’
  • Enchanted Woodland
  • Frozen in Time
  • When I Close My Eyes
  • Framed (Photo-driven)
  • Rock the Red Carpet
  • Let the Good Times Roll

Truth be told, the only ones for whom the actual theme will have resonance are those on the original prom committee. But, a thoughtfully presented dinner dance, with lively décor that’s tasteful (or tastefully fun) will give attendees a sweet reminder of when they were a part of that classic American rite of passage.
