Marriage is a beautiful thing; when you’ve finally found that person you want to spend the rest of your life with, your world takes on a whole new meaning, and with that, there is often pieces of symbolic jewlery involved – like your wedding ring!

That said, after a set amount of years after you’ve officiated your marriage, it is very common that couples will decide to renew their vows, reflecting on the years spent (so far) together, and looking positively into the many years to come. There are certainly no ‘set rules’ for renewing your vows, as it is really a personal decision between the couple, and looking back into recent history, there are many different reasons as to why couples decide to do so.

Perhaps they got married in a very basic way, like a small and simple ceremony at the courthouse, and hence they want to renew their vows for a more intimate celebration and experience. Or, the couple may have spent many years together, and they want to celebrate those years with a fresh matrimonial ceremony, which would reflect their now-matured relationship and joint life lessons.

Whichever the case, it is a truly individual moment when a couple decides to renew their vows, and one of the biggest questions involved, is whether or not they should purchase a new ring to represent this moment?

Sticking With The Old

The reasons for a couple to stick with their original rings when renewing their vows is definitely a very personal decision, and one which comes with many factors! As mentioned, vow renewals are a very personal and symbolic moment for a couple, and while the reasons for doing so always vary, these reasons often dictate whether or not they keep the same rings as when they were first married.

The biggest reason for a couple to stick with their original rings may be obvious – the financial reason. Depending, wedding rings can be expensive, and perhaps the couple would simply like to have a renewal ceremony that is centrally focused on them and the event, itself, and not so much on the actual piece of jewelry. If you are on a tight budget and would rather allocate the funds towards the actual experience, then using your existing rings would be ideal! If you’d like to spice it up a bit, and not fork out the cash on a brand new set of rings, you could also opt to simply engrave your existing ones, bringing a whole new meaning to your original pieces.

Additionally, a good reason to renew your vows using your original wedding rings could be simply because you love the ones you have! Perhaps on that special day, yourself and your partner put a lot of thought into the rings you chose, and even though you want to renew that special moment, nothing can replace the wedding rings you had when you first tied the knot, and you want to honor this moment in your renewal ceremony.

Splurging For The New

Adversely, and more excitedly, what if you and your spouse are set on purchasing new rings for your wedding vow renewal? In the opinion of most people, it is much more exciting to have a vow renewal ceremony with brand new rings, and this can be for many reasons. Of course, it always depends on the couple, but could purchasing new wedding rings be the right decision for you?

renewing your wedding vows

First off, depending on the length of time you’ve been married, you may find you want to use new wedding rings because your original ones are slightly outdated, and possibly not the same style you can both relate to now, in the present. This is very common if you’ve been married for many years, and perhaps when you originally got married, you just couldn’t afford the wedding rings of your dreams, so therefor now, the older and more financially successful ‘you’ would like to invest in something new and more in-line with what you wanted, originally. Thanks to modern times, you can go ahead and design your very own bespoke wedding rings, which can perfectly embody both of your personal styles and joint experiences.

Possibly the most romantic of reasons, you may want to find a new set of wedding rings for your renewal ceremony because it is something symbolic. You have now spent many years with your spouse, through the good times and the hard times, and a new piece of wedding jewelry would represent those emotional moments, bringing a form of ‘new life’ to your marriage. This certainly defines the idea of ‘romance’, and there’s no better way to celebrate many years of a happy marriage (and many more to come!), than with a brand new wedding ring which speaks volumes to your years together, now encompassing who you both are as people, in the current.

Love is surely a precious thing, and if we are lucky enough to find the person we want to be with for the rest of our lives, we want to honor this moment in every way possible. By renewing your vows, you remind yourselves of that breathtaking moment when you both made it ‘official’, and whether you choose to use your existing wedding rings, or opt for new ones, the love will remain strong (however, new jewelry always makes the point a bit stronger, as most ladies would agree!). Whichever the case, do what is most special and representative of your marriage, and as long as you follow your heart, your love (and rings) will last for all eternity!
