Shaping Up — Cleaning the House for Spring

Thanks Sheena for your guest post.

At last, temperatures are starting to rise and the days are getting longer. At this time of year, your thoughts might well turn to the annual spring clean. Getting your home spic and span is a satisfying feeling.

Although the process itself can be a bit of challenge, once it’s done you can take out a tumbler, sit back, and enjoy a well-deserved glass of wine (or two!) in your newly glowing abode. You may even want to arrange a post-clean-up family gathering at your place. Show off the fruits of your labor and let everyone know how industrious you’ve been!

Let the sunlight stream in

A fine place to start your spring clean is your windows. It’s amazing how much of a difference a bit of sparkling glass can make to a house. Clean windows let more light into rooms and, of course, allow you to see out more clearly.

Simply start by washing the panes with a sponge, using warm, soapy water. Don’t go overboard with the suds, though. Next, wipe off any excess water with a clean squeegee, starting at the top of the panes and working your way down. Then all that remains is to get rid of any residual dampness with a chamois and dry the windowsills beneath with a cloth.

For the best results, don’t clean your windows on a sunny day because direct sunlight dries them too quickly, leaving streaks.

Clear the clutter

Keeping family homes tidy can seem impossible, but there are ways to reduce clutter. You can use your spring clean to get rid of any belongings that you and your brood no longer use. Go through your house from top to bottom opening closets, cupboards, and drawers, and removing anything you aren’t likely to need. Be ruthless too. It will pay off.

Giving unwanted clothes, toys, and other items to charity or handing them to friends and family is a great feeling. It also means you’ll have more space to keep your home in tiptop shape.

Breathing new life into rooms

Once you’ve been through each room and given it a good clean and tidy, you might benefit from adding some new accessories. Perhaps some cushion covers or kids curtains could breathe new life into your rooms, while attractive prints could revamp your walls. You don’t have to spend a fortune on these extras and yet they can make a huge difference to the look and feel of your home.

Get the family involved

You might also benefit from getting the whole family involved in the tidy up. After all, many hands make light work! Afterwards, you can relax and spend more quality time together. This is also a great way to introduce kids to household chores.

Follow these tips and, when spring rolls around, you can enjoy the benefits of a tidier, cleaner home. You’ll be able to have extra fun with your family and, don’t forget, the next season will be summer. You’ll be wanting access to your beachwear!Image by Chiot’s Run, used under Creative Commons license.
