I wanted to let y’all know that Maria is sharing her thoughts below on eating disorders.
Just like people, eating disorders come in different shapes and sizes. There are a few different eating disorders people suffer from, and in the U.S. alone there are 25 million people suffering from eating disorders.
Why Eating Disorders?
There are many things that can lead to eating disorders. Some people with eating issues sometimes have other pre-existing mental issues, like depression or anxiety. Stress can cause a need to eat, or not eat.
Some people even develop eating disorders because of the culture they live in or the family they grow up with. For whatever reason someone is suffering, eating disorders can lead to premature death and health problems.
Overview Of Eating Disorders
There seem to be three basic eating disorders. Anorexia Nervosa is an illness in which the person sees themselves as fat or overweight even when they are not. They can be extremely underweight and still be obsessed with losing weight and not eating.
Binge eating is a disorder that causes the sufferer to eat and overeat. Even when they know they should stop they keep eating. This illness causes weight gain and obesity if not put in check.
The other major eating disorder is Bulimia Nervosa, which is marked by the person overeating and then forcing themselves to vomit to get rid of the food they’ve gorged themselves on.
Each of these illnesses has their own health risks, including possibility of early death. Anorexics can be deficient in numerous vitamins and minerals, and so can Bulimics. Bulimics risk damaging their esophagus from vomiting stomach acids.
How To Heal Eating Disorders
First you need to know that you have an eating disorder, and admit that it is a problem. If you ever fell like you lose control over your eating, eat so much that it makes you sick, have a complete different view of your body than what is factual, think about food constantly, or spend a lot of time obsessing about your weight, you may have an eating disorder.
There is therapy for eating disorders that may help a person who needs treatment of some kind. A therapist can help you learn self control and how to live a healthier life with food. They can also work with you to help you heal your body again from the effects of your illness, not just physically, but mentally as well.
Prayer, meditation, and other relaxing things, like yoga, can also be a great help to winning the battle against eating disorders. You can use these things to help relax you and clear your mind of your food thoughts.
With therapy and mindfulness, you can learn to be in control of your eating and learn that you control food. Food does not control you. Just being told that your habit is unhealthy isn’t enough to get you to stop when it’s a mental illness. If you know someone with an eating disorder they need guidance to make life changes.
