Moving can take a toll on your sanity when it starts to get down to the wire. Before you know it, your blood is boiling trying to get everyone to get their stuff together in time for the move. You’re breaking your back lifting box after box, you’re sweating, and you’re just flat-out annoyed even though you’re still happy you’re doing the move.

When it comes to moving … there are a lot of little things that come up that aren’t just part of packing and moving stuff around. That’s the purpose of this post. It’s a heads up so you can keep your sanity, money, and health (physical and mental) together during the transition.

moving tips

1.  Closure with the Neighbors

Maybe you made good friends with your neighbors (or not), but however the relationship went it would probably be best that you create some kind of closure before you head out especially if you have a family. The reason is that there might have been things you’ve been meaning to say to the neighbors or you want your kids to have one last, good day with friends before heading off.

Consider doing a BBQ or get together a week or two before the moving day so you can set down, catch up, talk plans, and say your goodbye’s rather than having them return home and seeing a vacant space next door.

2.  Asking for Recommendations

That new place you decided on … do you know:

  • Who will be your family doctor?
  • Who will be your veterinarian?
  • Who will be your dentist?

Make it a to-do to get a list of recommendations from your current service providers for the area you’re moving to (if applicable) otherwise at least do online research, read the reviews, and have a few in mind.

By having these recommendations you can ensure that you and your family are covered when it comes to the basic services. You probably already have an idea for your kids’ school so take the extra step and find them the right service providers that will be there as they grow.

3.  Getting Organized On the Pre-Move in Activities

There are other services and items that are easy to omit when you’re focused on getting things packed.

To cover all your bases you should see these moving tips, which include guides to:

  • Doing a change of address
  • Choosing and setting up a home security system
  • Saving money on the utilities
  • A few ideas for new home improvement projects
  • Some updates to make things energy efficient

These are all good things to know before you put all your stuff into the new place because it’s going to be painstaking work to do some of the base improvements if you have to constantly shuffle things out of the way. Likewise, things like security and energy efficiency should probably be high on your list so you can move in with peace-of-mind and start saving money right from the get-go.

Hand over some of these choices to your family while you’re at it.

Get together and talk about what type of entertainment they’d like to see in the home. Talk and make a plan on saving money around the home. Let them know about the security and how to use it effectively. Having the rest of the family voice their opinions and weigh in on the decisions can help with everyone’s adjustment to the new place.
